GoldenPlec is a music website and magazine that covers all kinds of music, with a particular focus on Irish music. Despite being founded in 2002 GoldenPlec had never gone through a branding or visual identity process. Due to time and financial constraints previous logos were either hastily put together or sourced from crowdsourcing websites. As someone who already writes for GoldenPlec I had an in-depth understanding of the brand and what was required to take it to the next level. I wanted to give GoldenPlec a solid visual foundation that matched the quality of the writing.
The solution I came up with was a two-logo approach. The “hero” logo would incorporate the name, the tagline and the plec. This logo is for striking, stand-alone instances like the top of the website or the large 5ft flag. The secondary logo would then facilitate where the logo needs to take a step back and let other content shine. Like on gig posters or on the magazine masthead. As so much of GoldenPlec’s interaction happens across Facebook and Twitter, a strong visual icon was a must. The icon would also have to be recognisable all the way down to a favicon size.
