Designing for yourself is always tricky. Being your own client brings its own set of challenges, and with no budget, I knew I’d have to think outside the box for this one. The way we consume music has also changed, so the artwork would have to be recognisable when browsing Spotify and iTunes.
After discussions with the rest of the band, we agreed on artwork that would allude to the washes of summer that’s found in the music without being cliched. Oh, and that it most definately would not have a band photo on the front. And as a new band with little name recognition, it was essential for the name to be both prominent and legible.
So I started by browsing the Flickr portfolios of friends to find inspiration – luckily I know some amazing photographers! After cheekily borrowing a corner of an existing image
I cheekily borrowed a small corner of an existing image and within a couple of hours it quickly went from a rough proof of concept into final artwork; well, once the photograph was cleared.
The artwork then went on to form the visual basis for artwork across all social channels.
